Belgium
Belgian Master trumpeter and flugelhornist Richard Rousselet discovered jazz at age 15.
Besides being awarded several prizes as a soloist in international festivals (a.o. MONTREUX), Rousselet influenced and shaped a large part of the Belgian and European Jazz scene as an exceptional educator (he lead the Jazz Department at the Conservatoire Royal de Music de Bruxelles from its inception in 1988 to his retiring in 2005, and still teaches numerous workshops) and soloist. He was involved in Marc Moulin’s bands: PLACEBO, SAM SUFFY and more recently, PICNIC. Thereafter, he was associated with pianist/composer Michel Herr, a.o. in SOLIS LACUS.
He also played with many visiting American soloists, including Hal Singer, Benny Bailey, Bill Frisell, Pepper Adams, Cecil Payne, Johnny Griffin.
Highly appreciated soloist, Richard Rousselet is a member of ACT Big Band, LILITH, SAX NO END and A TRAIN SEXTET of Jean Warland, SWEET SUBSTITUTES with Charles Loos, the group JAZZPIRINE assembled by Phil Abraham, and the BRT Big Band.
Since January 1989, he leads the jazz big band “WEST MUSIC CLUB”.
In 1985, he recorded the album “No, Maybe” with his quintet featuring saxophonist John Ruocco, pianist Michel Herr, bassist Jean-Louis Rassinfosse, and drummer Félix Simtaine.
He appears, as leader, in a quartet as well as in quintet with guitarist Jeanfrançois Prins (CD “Waitin’ for You” GAM 913).
In 1998, he created the ECAROH Quintet, a band which pays tribute to the music of Horace Silver.
In 2003, Rousselet created the SPECIAL QUINTET (then the NEW SPECIAL QUINTET in 2010) with fellow trumpeter Marie-Anne Standaert.
In 2020, he put together an all-star band celebrating his 65 YEARS OF JAZZ.
He can be heard in more than twenty albums.
In July 1994, the “Commission du patrimoine” awarded him with the DARCHE FRERES prize, which is given to a musician “who has devoted a life time, with honour and devotion, to the service of the art of music “.
