Make Someone Happy
Mary Kay (& guest Toots Thielemans)
Mary Kay has had an unusual career as a real Jazz vocalist, starting in her hometown Brussels, where she already was featured with the top big bands as a teenager, touring and performing with Benny Goodman who wanted to bring her back to the USA to be featured with his band, then after a long self-imposed break to raise her children, she came back with a vengeance, performing and touring with such heavy weights as piano master Eugen Cicero, Toots Thielemans, Peter Herbolzheimer and even as a featured soloist with Quincy Jones’ big band at the Montreux Jazz Festival.
Here is Mary’s one and only available recording to this day. It documents the depth of her expression, her impeccable time feel, the agility of her warm voice and her total ballad mastery. For it she surrounded herself with her all-time friend and compatriot Toots Thielemans, veteran bassist Jean Warland and a few of Belgium’s most talented young lions.
“Music is an all consuming passion for Mary Kay.
She has been “singing her heart out” for many years, and finally had the opportunity to make a recording surrounded by some of the finest Belgian musicians.
I was very happy to participate in the project.
Open your heart to Mary’s heart and “she’ll make you happy””
Toots Thielemans, chromatic harmonica and guitar legend
