Bo Waterschoot – bass, composer, arranger, musical director, executive producer
Belgian bass virtuosa Bo Waterschoot began playing the piano at the age of 6. But by the age of 13, she was fascinated by the bass guitar which she plays in its many forms, fretted or fretless, acoustic and electric, from 5 to 7 strings.
She studied with Alexandre Furnelle and Benoît Vanderstraeten before joining Michel Hatzigeorgiou’s class at the Brussels Royal Conservatory of Music at the age of 18.
In 1995, while already active professionally, she was personally selected by Billy Sheehan (Mr Big) as the winner of the “Billy Sheehan Scholarship” organized by the Musician Institute (Los Angeles) and BassPlayer Magazine. There she studied with internationally renowned musicians such as Alexis Sklarevsky, Steve Bailey, Carl Schroeder, Charlie Banacos, Gary Willis, Stanley Carke, Mike Stern, Scott Henderson, Putter Smith and others.
Back in Europe, she has enjoyed a brilliant career, playing in Europe, Africa, the U.S.A. and Canada.
She has recorded with Urban Trad (104, Kerua, Elem, Erbalunga), Chroma (Radea), KV Express (Luna, D-sensation), Anne Wolf (Amazone), Mirages (Eternité), Ialma (Ida e Volta), Sebastien Duthoit, Bass Day compilation (2012-2013), Silent Utopia (Embrace the Shadow), Johan Dupont Trio (Lydia) and others.
In addition to her activity as a bassist, Bo also has extensive teaching experience, from 2007 to 2010 at the Aalst Academy (instrument and ensembles), and at the Jazz Studio in Antwerp (instrument, ensemble, improvisation workshop and reading) from 2002 to 2013. She is also a member of the exam juries of the music conservatories of Brussels and Esch-sur-Alzette (Luxembourg). She gives Master Classes at Music Action pro (Hamme-Mille, BE) and at the Conservatoire de Bayonne (FR).
Bo produced the album “Voyage en bathyscaphe” by the Liège-based band Orféo.
She plays with many artists in a wide stylistic repertoire, ranging from folk to contemporary, jazz, pop, metal, rock, Brazilian music, …
These include: Julien Jaffres, with whom she recorded the album Rock’n Celtic Guitar. Kv Express with Sophie Cavez (Luna, D-sensation), the Rhonny Ventat Funky Jazz Band, Who’s the Man, Candy Robbers, Simone (with Stephane Bissot), Snaar Maar Waar, Ignazio Di Salvo’s Thug Trio, Mountrose, Silent Utopia, Bruno Castellucci’s LEGACY, Jeanfrançois Prins, Patrick Defossez (Sois belle et … raconte / Surf and Turf), L’Opéra Royal de la Monnaie (Is This The End? I & II- J.L. Fafchamps), Dick Van der Harst (B-Classic), Julie Mossay, Johan Dupont Trio .
She was musical director of the world premiere in French of the musical “Come From Away” at the Festival Bruxellons! (2024)
Bo is a demonstrator for bass amplifier manufacturer Hevos and for Human base basses built by Siggy Jager, among others.
She has given solo demonstrations at Frankfurt Messe (2003-2014), Dutch Music event (2012-2013), “Gitaarforum.nl bas dag” in The Hague (2012-2013), BassDay in Germany and Holland (2010-2014), London Bass day (2015). She also tests and presents instruments in the form of videos (YouTube/Facebook/Instagram) for Bass Freaks SPRL.
